The Brief
The magnificent Kylemore Abbey was in transition from the famous girls school operated by the Benedictine Order of Nuns to a new future managed by a Trust, presenting the Castle, garden, woodlands and its wonderful setting as a heritage hub for the area of West Galway
The Approach
The Trust managed both the restoration and conservation of the Castle and the reimagining and refurnishing of its interiors.
The role of THMS was to work with the Trust, its staff and its contractors to furnish and lay out the interiors to achieve historic and period integrity and a visitor experience that would accurately recreate the vision and tell the story of Mitchel and Margaret Henry the founding family and its history.
The Challanges
The furnishing and fit out challenge for us, Tourism and Heritage Management Services (THMS) was to work within a budget with the Trust and project staff to provide the furniture and fittings and to lay out the rooms and create the enhances visitor experience.
The Results
Today Kylemore Abbey is among the top attractions in Ireland with multipole visitor offerings. Both the Castle and Victorian Garden are open and thriving while the site offers incredible landscapes, with great food and shopping experiences with locally produced product offerings
